What is a Board Certified Physician?

Lawrence Martin, MD, FACSWHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR A PATIENT WHEN HE OR SHE IS TOLD TO CHOOSE A SURGEON WHO IS “BOARD CERTIFIED” FOR THEIR PLASTIC SURGERY?

A Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) and he or she operates only on the face, head and neck. Established in 1986 to improve the quality of medical and surgical treatment available to the public, the ABFPRS has set standards for the training and practice of facial plastic surgery and determines which candidates meet these standards through a rigorous program of examination and certification.

To be certified by the ABFPRS, Dr. Martin and some 700 other surgeons in the United States and the world must already be board certified in another specialty such as the American Board of Otolaryngology or the American Board of Plastic Surgery. A surgeon must also successfully complete a two day examination, submit a peer-review of at least two years clinical and operative experience, hold proper licensure and subscribe to the ABFRPS code of ethics.
